Bai Ji Guan is one of the Four Famous Cong of Mount Wuyi.
The tea trees mainly grow around the Outer Ghost Cave that is below the Hui Yuan rock flame peak and the post-Shan of Wuyi public ancestral temple. Appearance characterized by peculiar buds and leaves, light green tealeaves, green with white, curved and fuzzy buds, it has a shape that looks like the head of comb of a white golden pheasant, and thus it got the name “Bai Ji Guan”(White comb tea/White Crest tea). The finished tea is cream-colored with milky white in color and lustre, bright orange in tea water, with lingering fragrance in the mouth. After drinking, it is refreshing and beneficial to eyes. Since it such magic functions, people called this tea tree as “Bai Ji Guan”.
White comb is native to the Outer Ghost Cave that is below the Hui Yuan rock flame peak. But people found it in the post-Shan of Wen Me Ci which is behind the Wuyi Palace, so there is another legend to say this is the origin. Tea trees from the two place has the same plant character: about 1.75 meters tall, quite a lot branches, long leaf in oval shape, dark green in tea leaf and looks glossy; tender leaves are thin and soft, light color, often slightly yellow which forms two obvious color layers with the dark green old leaves. The name of Bai Ji Guan also derived from this reason.
You must doubt that the White comb tea has only one tea tree, but how can you have a large quantity? It is because that the Bai Ji Guan is belonging to a clonal younger species. And there are some optimum growing environments for the Bai Ji Guan, for example, the Outer Ghost Cave and the Wuyi Palace White Snake Cave that below the Hui Yuan flame peak as well as the Bat Cave below the Yin Ping peak. White comb began to be grown since the Ming Dynasty, and it appeared earlier than Da Hong Pao. We can asexual plant the White comb as long as there is suitable growth environment.
But since the Bai Ji Guan has a scarce output so far, it is a rarity. The made-up tea is cream-colored with milky white in tea leaf, bright orange in tea water, lingering fragrance left in the mouth, refreshing and benefiting eyes; it has a magic effect on treating an illness. There was a famous story about using Bai Ji Guan in treating a foul disease successfully which made it widely known by people.
